A tragic collision between a bus and tractor-trailer in the Pocono Mountain
Region this morning has resulted in 3 deaths and multiple injuries. According
to Monroe County officials, the accident occurred shortly after 10 am
on Wednesday June 3rd when a bus transporting Italian tourists crashed
head-on with a commercial truck.
Here’s what we know about the crash so far:
- The bus, traveling from New York City to Niagra falls, and the tractor-trailer
both experienced severe damages. Following the collision, the cab of the
truck came to rest in a wooded area some distance away.
- The latest reports have confirmed that 3 victims were killed, including
the driver. At least 13 victims were reportedly injured. Some of the bus
passengers were said to have been trapped on the bus in the aftermath
of the crash.
- Both lanes of I-380 were closed as emergency crews responded to the accident.
At 2 pm, southbound lanes were opened while officials continued their
Based on aerial coverage of the scene, it appears as though the tractor-trailer
crossed the median. While it is still too early to determine the cause,
it is well known that driver fatigue - a potential factor - has become
a huge problem in the United States.
Just last week, Walmart reached a confidential settlement with Tracy Morgan
over a fatal truck accident that left the comedian seriously injured last
year. The driver of the truck had been awake for over 24 hours at the
time of the crash. If the driver of the tractor-trailer that crossed the
median in this accident was driving beyond the permissible “hours
of service,” then the chance of exhaustion and falling asleep at
the wheel would have been substantial.
