Saying Goodbye to a Friend and Respected Leader Among Philadelphia Personal Injury Attorneys – In Memory of David S. Shrager

David S. ShragerDavid S. Shrager was a familiar face, not only in the Philadelphia legal circle but also among personal injury attorneys from all around the nation. With his passing in 2005, our firm lost a dear friend; the legal profession lost an outstanding leader; and the clients we represent lost an unwavering advocate.

Though he asked to be remembered simply as “an honest lawyer who just tried to help people,” David S. Shrager left a much more significant legacy. In Philadelphia, many personal injury attorneys will remember him as a caring mentor -- a trial lawyer's trial lawyer who always took the time to provide sage advice.

He was in the first wave of volunteers to help when legal aid was needed. After the tragic events of 9/11, David was one of the first volunteer lawyers to participate in Trial Lawyers Care, the largest and most successful pro bono legal services program ever undertaken. (And he took his commitment one step further by convincing the Philadelphia personal injury attorneys at his firm, Shrager Spivey & Sachs, to contribute to the cost of the organization in place of its annual holiday party.)

David S. Shrager was a founder of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association and served as its president from 1971 to 1972. He was also a past president of the American Association of Justice (AAJ), and was serving a term on the AAJ Executive Committee when he passed away. From 1985 to 1988, he also served as President of the Roscoe Pound Institute; he was a member of the Board of Overseers of the RAND Institute of Civil Justice for six years; helped form Trial Lawyers for Public Justice; served as chairman of the Pennsylvania State Bar Association’s Civil Litigation Section; and was a member of the Civil Procedural Rules Committee of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
